Criminal Defense Lawyer Pleads Guilty to Federal Charge Involving Bribe

Alonzo Ramos, a Laredo, Texas, criminal defense attorney, recently pleaded guilty to one count of interstate travel in aid of racketeering, after federal prosecutors charged that in 2008 he visited a drug trafficker held at a Louisiana prison, to ensure the person was not cooperating with authorities.

According to the Dallas Morning News’ Crime Blog, Ramos told the inmate, identified in court documents as L.T., the he could get $48,500 in exchange for his silence. According to a U.S. district court for the Northern District of Texas filing related to Ramos’ plea agreement, the money was from drug trafficking.

Ramos is scheduled to be sentenced July 5. He faces a maximum of five years in prison. According to KGNS-TV, Ramos is the son of Andy Ramos, a former Webb County judge.
