Federal prosecutors have charged a dead Detroit man with running an illegal lottery.

Herbert Daniels Sr., who died about a month ago, had been named in March in a criminal complaint that was unsealed Wednesday, according to a report by the Detroit News.

Daniels was accused of taking bets on legitimate lottery numbers. An informant told the FBI he had been running the illegal operation for decades.

Also indicted were Daniels’ wife, Willie Mae Truvillion, who is “gravely ill,” the couple’s lawyer told the Associated Press, and a son. Both deny the allegations.

A spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Detroit says it just learned about Daniels’ death and will drop the case against him when it receives an official notification.
