Robert Mueller III, who served as FBI director in the administrations of both President George W. Bush and President Barack Obama, is joining Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale & Dorr as a partner, the firm announced Monday.

Mueller, who held the position from 2001 to 2013, was the longest-serving FBI director since J. Edgar Hoover, Reuters reports. He took office one week before 9/11, and he changed the office into more of a counterterrorism agency.

Mueller, a former Marine and federal prosecutor, is one of three high-ranking federal administration officials that WilmerHale has hired in the past few years. Dan Berkovitz, previously general counsel of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission, joined the firm in September, as did Mark Cahn, who served as general counsel of the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Also, Mueller was a partner with Hale & Dorr from 1993 to 1995, the New York Times’ DealBook blog reports. The firm merged with Wilmer Cutler Pickering in 2004.
