Lawrence Paul Higgins, Lawyer and Horseman, Found Murdered in Florida
A former Washington, D.C., lawyer known for his love of racehorses was found murdered at his upscale Florida home on Friday.
Lawrence Paul Higgins, 61, was found that morning by a business associate who had a key to his Odessa home, in suburban Tampa, and authorities later determined that he had been killed by what authorities describe as upper torso trauma, according to articles Saturday and Sunday in the St. Petersburg Times. The business associate went to check on Higgins because he hadn’t heard from him in several days.
A former insurance law practitioner in D.C., Higgins was the CEO of Delaware-based Icarus Aircraft, which provides blimps and flying crews to corporate customers. He was also a racehorse owner and executive vice president of the Tampa Bay Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association.
Board member Kathy Guciardo said Higgins had been a member of the group for more than 20 years, and recalled the light-up Kentucky Derby cap he liked to wear, to make people smile. “He was really into horses,” she said.
Robbery does not appear to be a motive in the murder, according to authorities.
