Updated: A Southern California lawyer died at a hospital this morning after being shot in the head last night at about 8:30 p.m. outside his upscale home, and a police detective subsequently said his death might be a “targeted killing,” although suicide has not yet been ruled out.

He is identified by the Daily Breeze and the newspaper’s South Bay Crimes & Courts blog as partner Jeffrey Tidus of the Baute & Tidus business litigation boutique in Los Angeles, based on information from neighbors.

A graduate of the Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California at Berkeley, Tidus focused his law practice on complex civil litigation including insurance coverage, securities fraud and financial institutions cases, according to his law firm biography. He formerly practiced at Lewis D’Amato Brisbois & Bisgaard in Los Angeles.

Neighbors said Tidus enjoyed running marathons and spending time with his pet dogs outside the office, the Daily Breeze reports.

He died at about 9:30 a.m. at Torrance Memorial Medical Center where he was taken from his home in Rolling Hills Estates on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, according to the L.A. Now blog of the Los Angeles Times.

An unidentified neighbor said Tidus returned from a social event shortly before the Monday evening shooting, went into his home and then back came out to his car to get a laptop computer, reports a subsequent L.A. Now post.

Detectives from the Los Angeles County sheriff’s department are investigating but have made no arrests.
