Will Alec Baldwin go into politics? “The desire is there.” But one law firm’s idea to put him on the ballot in Ohio is unlikely to come to pass.

Baldwin revealed in a recent interview with Playboy that “a law firm in a liberal Democratic bastion in Ohio state politics” wants to launch his career. He said the firm sent him a cover letter that read, “Mr. Baldwin, here’s who we represent, the kinds of cases we handle, our credentials in Ohio state politics. We want you to move to Ohio and run for governor.”

Attempts to learn the identity of the firm through Baldwin’s publicist were unsuccessful. [Note: If you know the name of the firm, feel free to shoot an email to the author of this post.]

Like Baldwin, Ohio’s current governor, Ted Strickland, is a Democrat. But if Strickland “gets the kinds of cuts that he is proposing in certain areas, the residents of Ohio are likely never to forgive him. This would be Baldwin’s perfect opportunity to run on the Democratic ticket,” the Cleveland Leader wrote.

Baldwin admitted in the interview both that he’s thought he could move to New Jersey or Connecticut to run for office, and that he’s a “carry-me-out-in-a-box New Yorker.”

NBC points out that Baldwin is still under contract to appear on 30 Rock through 2012, and Baldwin indicated in the same interview that he will retire from acting at that point.

“In March 2012 I’ll wake up and say, ‘What am I going to do now? Am I done?’ I think I will be done. I may finish a play or something, but I’m retiring at the wrap party.”
