Seeking volunteers for a staff reduction program, a well-known law firm in upstate New York is offering a buyout to 38 of its 60 full-time staff members.

The Jaeckle Fleischmann & Mugel staffers have until May 15 to decide whether to accept the buyout, which offers a “salary continuation” for an unspecified period of time, according to the Buffalo News. No more than 10 staff members will be permitted to accept the buyout offer.

“The practice of law has changed, between the advances in technology and just the way you communicate with clients and move things around and the ability of attorneys to do their own work at their computers,” managing partner Edward Piwowarczyk tells the newspaper.

The firm closed its Rochester, N.Y., office last year. It now has 58 attorneys in offices in Buffalo and Amherst.
