Proposed S.D. Abortion Ban May Bring Roe v. Wade Challenge

A revamped measure in South Dakota that would ban abortions except for women who've been raped or are victims of incest is gaining steam and may present the challenge that abortion foes are waiting for.
The referendum comes two years after South Dakotans voted down a more restrictive ban. Abortion opponents drew hope from the experience, however, because voters indicated they would have supported a ban had there been allowances for rape and incest victims, the Wall Street Journal reports.
Ban opponents have planned an event today in Washington, D.C., to draw more attention to the issue.
"While South Dakota accounts for only 0.1 percent of all abortions, it has a potentially disproportionate effect on public policy because people are seeking to create a vehicle to overturn Roe," Sarah Stoesz, president and chief executive of Planned Parenthood for Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota, is quoted saying.
