Forget the traditional landscapes and oriental rugs.

A developing trend among BigLaw firms housed in modern offices with a minimalist esthetic is to commission original art, often in a large-scale format, such as a wall mural, reports the Washington Post (reg. req.).

Among those in the forefront of this approach is Covington & Burling, which will soon display the first major installation in the Northeast of work by Venezuelan artist Carlos Cruz-Diez in its main lobby.

“Law firms went from, ‘OK, we have to have some things on the wall’ to, ‘We should have some nice paintings,’ to now, which is, ‘I’m interested in art and I want to have something that can reflect the firm’s vision and how we see ourselves through works of art,’ ” art consultant Jean Efron, who often advises law firms, told the newspaper.
