Death-row inmate gets execution delay, thanks to Florida AG's fundraiser conflict
Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi says she made a mistake when she asked the governor to delay the execution of a convicted murderer.
Bondi asked for the delay because the execution date conflicted with her with her re-election kick-off reception scheduled for Tuesday evening, the Tampa Bay Times reports. Bondi later released a statement saying she should not have made the request, according to the Tampa Bay Times, the Palm Beach Post and the News Service of Florida.
Marshall Lee Gore’s execution is now scheduled for Oct. 1.
Bondi said she personally put two people on death row when she was a prosecutor and she has participated in eight executions since she took office as attorney general. “The planned execution of Marshall Lee Gore had already been stayed twice by the courts, and we should not have requested that the date of the execution be moved,” the statement said.
Gov. Rick Scott said he delayed the execution because of Bondi’s request, but he didn’t realize the reason was because of Bondi’s fundraiser.
