Dorsey & Whitney Cuts Pay for All Associates By 10 Percent

Dorsey & Whitney hasn't laid off any attorneys. But the law firm did impose a 10 percent across-the-board pay cut on all associates.

And bonuses were also reduced by an undisclosed amount, reports the Star Tribune.

News of the salary cut follows word yesterday that Dorsey & Whitney, which is the largest law firm based in Minneapolis, has axed 55 staff jobs.

An Above the Law post today provides further details, based on information from unidentified tipsters.

If a firm is genuinely choosing between economic layoffs and an across the board pay cut (and not just seeking to pad PPP), then a pay cut is the ethical way to go.

Sure, attorneys in busy practice areas will complain that they are carrying the “dead wood” in slow ones.  But what goes around comes around, and their areas could just as easily be slow the next time.

I do feel for the staff, though.  This is not a good time to be looking for work as a paralegal (or anything else, for that matter).

A cottage with a full pantry is better than a hungry castle.
