Got an Offer? Grab It, Recruiter Tells Would-Be Summer Associates

Posted Nov 14, 2008 1:55 PM CST

Applying for work as a law firm summer associate is a faster-paced musical chairs game than ever before this year, as the list of law firms making layoffs seemingly increases on an almost-daily basis.

If you are lucky enough to have multiple offers, don't hoard them. Now is the time to accept promptly, if possible, lest you give employers the idea that you're not all that keen on working for them, recommends Lynne Traverse in an Am Law Daily post. She is recruiting and professional development director at Bryan Cave.

"In addition to harming other students, holding/hoarding offers at this point conveys a sense of indecision and less than total enthusiasm about the employer's opportunity," she writes. "This is not the way you want to begin your relationship with an employer."

ACTUALLY, the firms will ULTIMATELY make the BEST offers to well-papered candidates who play COY, and who SLACK off and act like a BIG DEAL all summer.  It AMAZES me that the firms FALL for it (nearly every time) because they KNOW they know BETTER, theyjust CAN’T RESIST.  Maybe they see their YOUNGER selves. . .

I add that the UNFOUNDED accusations by this person are NOT even CONSISTENT.  Sometimes he asserts THEFT of the (apparently missing) CHEESE, but OTHER times (e.g., the post above), only ATTEMPTED theft of the CHEESE.  (NEXT, he will be blaming ME for Ellen’s missing tatty scones, and BREAD, and brax o’ ham).  And it’s BELHAVEN (please)!

O.K., the thing I’m not getting is McLeod’s use of UPPER case words THROUGHOUT his COMMENTS.  Doesn’t help dude, it’s just distracting and makes me want to skip over what you’re saying.

As to the “recession” ... sorry, I’m of the opinion that those who want jobs will have jobs.  Maybe not el-primo jobs, but jobs nonetheless.

The goal for law students should be to get good experience over their summer, not be coddled like somebody’s pet and ears some bloody silly salary at a big firm.  and with a recession on, that becomes even more important.  If you can get the salary AND the good experience, then go for it… but for the most part I’ve found that the two don’t go together.

The CAPS have been amply explained in an EARLIER post.  PLEASE pay attention.  It is bad ENOUGH I have to repeat myslef to these fellows with the CHEESE obsession (which cannot be HEALTHY).
