Transformation of a historic hospital into Savannah Law School’s new home has been approved by the Savannah Historic District Board.

Plans to renovate the 1819 facility, in stages, are also expected to preserve a 300-year-old oak tree in front of the Candler Hospital on Drayton Street, the Savannah Morning News reports. By meeting historic preservation standards, the project should qualify for federal tax credits.

The first part of the work should be complete by September.

The new law school, which is part of the John Marshall Law School in Atlanta, has received over 400 applications since December. It plans to enroll 95 students in its first class. Enrollment is then expected to increase to 400 to 450 students in subsequent years.
