George Zimmerman Tells Martin's Parents He's Sorry for Their Loss; Bond Set at $150K
A Florida judge has set bond at $150,000 for George Zimmerman, accused of second-degree murder in the death of teen Trayvon Martin.
Judge Kenneth Lester Jr. set the bond and added conditions, report the Orlando Sentinel, the New York Times, the Associated Press and CNN. Zimmerman must wear a GPS monitor, he can’t have any guns, can’t drink or use controlled substances, and he must abide by a curfew.
Prosecutors had sought no bond, or a bond at a minimum of $1 million, ABC Action News reports.
Zimmerman issued an apology at the bail hearing this morning. “I wanted to say I am sorry for the loss of your son. I did not know how old he was,” he said, apparently addressing Martin’s parents. “I thought he was a little bit younger than I am. I did not know if he was armed or not.”
Zimmerman’s father, Robert Zimmerman, testified that his son had gashes on the back of his head and a swollen face when he saw him the day after the shooting. The defendant’s mother, Gladys Zimmerman, said her son “is very protective of people, regardless of race.” In 2010, she said, George Zimmerman had passed out fliers urging the arrest of a police official’s son caught on tape punching a homeless man.
