A security guard on Thursday shot and killed a knife-wielding man at a courthouse in Dearborn Heights, Michigan.

Police say Mark Henning, 48, of Dearborn Heights was killed after confronting the security guard at the Dearborn Heights Justice Center, which houses the court and the police department, report the Detroit Free Press, MLive.com, Fox2Detroit and WXYZ.

Witness Jamal Collins told the Detroit Free Press and WXYZ that Henning was near the metal detector when he lunged at the guard with a steak knife. The guard shot Henning once, and when Henning raised the knife, the guard fired about five more rounds, Collins said. The guard is a retired police officer, Fox2Detroit reports.

Collins said Henning’s brother was with him at the courthouse. The brother began screaming and crying, saying he didn’t expect the incident to happen and that Mark Henning was on cocaine, according to Collins.

Karen Henning, who is married to Mark Henning’s brother, told Fox2Detroit that Mark Henning was scheduled to enter rehab on Friday, and he was going to court for a hearing to get the help he needed. “He was a wonderful person when he was on medication,” Henning said of her brother-in-law.
