An associate at Latham & Watkins and the office manager of a small law firm were killed on Tuesday when a car crashed into the Sweet Tomatoes pizzeria in Newton, Massachusetts, where they were customers.

The associate was 32-year-old Gregory Morin, who worked in the areas of securities litigation and white-collar defense at Latham & Watkins in Boston, report the Am Law Daily, Above the Law, the Boston Globe and the Boston Herald. He is survived by his wife, Erica, who is also a lawyer, and their 15-month-old daughter.

Morin was previously an associate at Williams & Connolly and, before law school, a legal assistant at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. He graduated from George Washington University Law School in 2010.

Four Latham associates released a statement saying Morin was a devoted parent and husband. “Greg was the type of colleague and mentor you hope to have in the notoriously high pressure, high stakes world of BigLaw litigation—he was calm, smart, level-headed, astute, hardworking, responsible, collegial, a March Madness savant … and absolutely hilarious.”

A statement by Latham’s Boston managing partner, Johan “Hans” Brigham, called Morin “a highly-skilled young lawyer and a compassionate person with incredible spirit and singular wit.”

The office manager was 52-year-old Eleanor Miele of Tamkin & Hochberg in Newton. She was at the restaurant to pick up pizza for volunteers preparing Easter baskets for needy children at her church, her husband said. Tamkin & Hochberg partner Jonathan Tamkin told the Boston Globe that Miele was “the soul of our office.”

The car driver was in three previous car crashes. His medical history is being investigated, prosecutors said.
