Law firms Saul Ewing and Arnstein & Lehr merge

Philadelphia-based Saul Ewing and Arnstein & Lehr of Chicago have merged, effective last Friday, to create a 400-lawyer firm with 15 offices.
The new firm will be called Saul, Ewing, Arnstein & Lehr, the Legal Intelligencer reports. According to the Wall Street Journal (sub. req.), the firm has strengths in bankruptcy, litigation, finance and real estate.
Both firms have shared several clients, according to a press release. The new firm will have 15 offices, located on the East Coast, in the Midwest and Florida.
Barry Levin, who served as Saul Ewing’s managing partner, remains in that position, the Legal Intelligencer reports. Jeffrey Shapiro, who was Arnstein & Lehr’s managing partner, now leads the firm’s Miami office and will also serve on the executive committee.
In May, the Legal Intelligencer reported reported that a merger of the firms was being considered, and that Arnstein & Lehr had approximately 150 lawyers. In almost a decade, Saul Ewing has been involved with several mergers with smaller law firms, including Baltimore’s Weinberg & Green in 1998; Washington-based Schmeltzer Aptaker & Shepard in 2006; and Boston’s Dionne & Gass in 2011.
