White-collar criminal defense lawyer is shot by man posing as police officer
A Michigan lawyer is in stable condition after he was shot by a man who came to his door and pretended to be a police officer.
David Neil Zacks, 57, was shot Wednesday evening at his Bloomfield Hills home, report the Associated Press, the Detroit News and the Oakland Press. He dialed 911 and was taken to a hospital where he had emergency surgery for his wounds.
Police say they don’t think the shooting was a random act.
Zacks told police the suspect rang his doorbell and said he was a police officer. Zacks refused to let the man enter his home and threatened to call police. The man fired several times as Zacks closed his door.
Zacks is a partner at Ishbia & Gagleard in Birmingham, Mich., who specializes in federal white-collar criminal defense and complex commercial litigation. He also represented the city of Detroit in more than 50 civil rights cases.
According to the Detroit Press, Zacks was involved in several high-profile cases. In one, he represented Utah Jazz guard Jeff Malone in 1993 in an unsuccessful paternity suit. In another, he represented a 16-year-old student in 2004 who was convicted of second-degree murder in the shooting death of another student.
