Police have charged a 50-year-old man with second-degree forgery and petit larceny in an alleged scam involving about 30 law firms.

The suspect, James Hill, has pleaded not guilty, according to the New York Law Journal.

The complaint (PDF posted by the New York Law Journal) says the scam worked this way: A man identifying himself as “Jimmy” would tell law firms he had found a package addressed to them on the subway, and he would deliver it if they paid for his cab fare.

Law firms that agreed reimbursed the man $38.50 in claimed cab fare and sometimes paid more in tips. When they opened the package, they found it only contained copies of a certificate of insurance. The complaint didn’t identify the law firms, but a partner at Hughes Hubbard & Reed has said her firm lost $100 in the scam.
