Not Worried About a Career-Ending Exit? Snark Offers Ideas for Leaving the Law

Former JetBlue flight attendant Steven Slater has hogged the headlines lately, following his sudden exit from a 20-year job via an airplane emergency slide.

But attorneys who aren’t worried about flushing their legal career down the toilet also have options for a dramatic departure, writes the Snark in a Fulton County Daily Report humor column.

The firmwide e-mail rant has already been overdone, the Snark says. But those who wish to stand out might consider announcing a job exit at the conclusion of a filed court motion or jumping atop a conference table at a televised firm event and stripping off a jacket, tie and button-down oxford to reveal a T-shirt that says “Big Law Bites—I Quit!”

To truly become a legend in your own time, however, the Snark recommends a more subtle approach: Stop dressing for success. Start leaving work at 4 p.m. for the day. And just in case anyone misses the point you can get a forehead tattoo of “Billable Machine.” Eventually, of course, the firm will notice this new attitude and get the paperwork together for a layoff. But by then you will also have stopped showing up for work at all.

As the story circulates and fellow associates wonder what happened, the Snark says, you can count on your story being told for years to come.

Readers, can you do better than this? On a bad day, how would you fantasize about leaving the law in a manner that your colleagues will never forget? Or, better yet, do you know of someone who actually did make a dramatic departure from practice?
