A Connecticut prosecutor has resigned, effective Feb. 1, after a probe of what the Connecticut Law Tribune describes as a possible “too-friendly relationship” with a defense lawyer who reportedly was a childhood friend.

Published reports have said federal authorities have been investigating whether Waterbury State’s Attorney John Connelly treated the defense lawyer’s clients more favorably than others, the legal publication notes.

It doesn’t include any comment from Connelly, but a Hartford Courant article provides more details about the probe. It also reports that Connelly, who is in his early sixties, has been battling colon cancer and says he is going to focus on regaining his health after 31 years as a prosecutor with an unmatched record of success.

Connelly tells the Republican-American that his decision to resign had nothing to do with the investigation and was prompted by his health.
