Stanford law dean Larry Kramer will be resigning on Aug. 31 to lead the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, a philanthropic organization focused on social and environmental problems.

Stanford announced the resignation on Wednesday at Stanford University News. The San Jose Mercury News and Above the Law have stories.

Kramer told the San Jose Mercury News in 2010 that he hoped to make the No. 3 ranked school the best in the nation. In the most recent rankings by U.S. News & World Report, the law school jumped from third to second place, overtaking Harvard.

Kramer backed greater integration between the law school and the university. He made it easier for students to take university courses by switching from semesters to quarters at the law school. The result was “28 formal individual joint degrees and limitless opportunities to customize a joint degree,” Stanford University News says.

Kramer also emphasized expanded clinical training, pro bono and public service. He has been dean since 2004.
