Being called a “Court Street lawyer” is a pejorative to some Brooklyn attorneys—but a badge of honor to others.

Now the president of the New York City borough is seeking to give a 5,000-attorney legal contingent known for its bare-knuckled style of representation a new brand as the Downtown Brooklyn Legal District, reports the New York Daily News.

With the help of area businesses eager to benefit from increased legal traffic, President Marty Markowitz hopes the makeover will put other New York practitioners in a Brooklyn state of mind, the newspaper writes. Among the inducements that could lure other lawyers to relocate to Brooklyn are fancy new street signs and office construction projects that will, for the first time, provide room for larger firms to set up shop in the area.

At the same time, though, it appears that some things may never change:

“Brooklyn lawyers are legendary,” Markowitz tells the newspaper. “If you want someone who’s going to defend you, these are the guys. We might not be white shoes; let’s just say we’re tan shoes. But our lawyers, they are assertive and they express the Brooklyn attitude.”
