Winston & Strawn has announced it is opening a Dallas office with 21 partners hired from eight different law firms.

Seven of the Dallas partners come from Locke Lord; six are from Fish & Richardson; and three are from Jones Day. Five other partners come from five different law firms. Texas Lawyer (sub. req.), Bloomberg Big Law Business and the Dallas Morning News have stories; a press release is here.

Several law firms have opened offices in Houston in the last decade, and observers expect the same thing to happen in Dallas, according to Bloomberg. “Already, other international law firms including Jones Day and Baker McKenzie have opened offices in Dallas,” the article reports, “but none in recent memory have opened with so many partners and from top practices.”

Leading the Dallas office will be Fish & Richardson trial lawyer Thomas Melsheimer, who successfully represented Mark Cuban in his insider-trading fight with the Securities and Exchange Commission, and Bryan Goolsby, a former executive chair and managing partner of Locke Lord.

Goolsby told Bloomberg that Winston expects to hire additional lateral partners and associates, bringing the total number of lawyers in the Dallas office to between 55 and 60.

Winston & Strawn has also added two partners to its Houston office from Locke Lord.
