Criminals in New York City apparently prefer Yankees attire.

The criminal fashion trend is noted by the New York Times. “A curious phenomenon has emerged at the intersection of fashion, sports and crime,” the Times reports. “Dozens of men and women who have robbed, beaten, stabbed and shot at their fellow New Yorkers have done so while wearing Yankees caps or clothing.”

The Times came to its conclusion after reviewing press releases, images of suspects in police sketches and surveillance videos, and news articles. The newspaper found that more than 100 people identified as suspects or persons of interests in serious crimes since 2000 wore Yankees attire at the time of their crimes or arraignments. “No other sports team comes close,” the story says.

One criminologist interviewed by the Times, University at Albany professor Frankie Bailey, suggested that the trend might be the result of the Jay-Z effect, named after the rapper who sports a Yankees hat.

Sports marketers, on the other hand, say it’s all a matter of numbers; Yankees clothing sells the most, making it a popular choice both for criminals and law-abiding citizens.
