A law firm based in Jackson, Miss., has confirmed that it is poised to become one of the biggest in Nashville, Tenn., as a 37-lawyer group exits Miller & Martin for the Nashville office of Butler Snow O’Mara Stevens and Cannada.

The move, confirmed in a Thursday press release by Butler Snow, follows a vote by Miller & Martin partners last year to remove their chairman from a leadership role, reports the Nashville Business Journal.

With the new lawyers, Butler Snow will have about 220 lawyers practicing in 12 offices throughout the country.

Miller & Martin, which is based in Chattanooga and also has an Atlanta office, alluded to the move in a May 25 press release that said the firm intended to maintain a Nashville office. Relying on unidentified sources, the article says the firm’s Nashville office will have about 10 lawyers after their colleagues exit for Butler Snow.

“There may be various reasons for this decision, but the overriding reason has to do with different philosophies about how to build and expand our practice. While we worked hard to reach consensus on a common direction, it became clear that was not going to be possible,” the current chairman of Miller & Martin, James Haley, said in the release. “We decided that it was better for us to pursue our growth strategies separately. We remain committed to having a presence in the Nashville market.”
