A bill to repeal the death penalty in Illinois lost by one vote, 59-58 in the state house of representatives today.

But in an unusual do-over vote later the same day, the measure gained the 60 votes it needed to move on to the state senate, reports the Clout Street blog of the Chicago Tribune.

It is uncertain, however, what the final fate of the bill will be, as a lame-duck session of the state’s legislature nears its end.

Illinois has had a moratorium on the imposition of the death penalty for the past decade.
