The Ohio man who pleaded guilty in the rape and kidnapping of three women he held at his home for nearly a decade was found hanging in his cell on Tuesday in an apparent suicide.

Ariel Castro, 53, was found at 9:20 p.m., report the Associated Press, the Columbus Dispatch and the Cleveland Plain Dealer. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital. He was not on suicide watch, though his cell was checked every 30 minutes.

Castro was sentenced on Aug. 1 to life plus 1,000 years in prison. His lawyers said in an interview that he fit the profile of sociopathic disorder and they hoped he would be studied to help protect the public from other predators.
