Anyone can spend a lot of money to purchase expensive clothes. But some attorneys are among a seemingly increasing group of thrifty shoppers who see no reason to spend more when they can get the same pre-worn merchandise for less—or sometimes even for free.

And, on the other side of such value-conscious shopping, some lawyers are also apparently looking to make a few extra dollars in tough economic times by selling their own professional attire.

For example, “apparently, if one were to scan through eBay in the mens’ suits section, one would find at least one lawyer in the U.S. who has been so financially damaged that he is selling his expensive designer suits at a fraction of their cost, just to make ends meet,” reports the Financial Post. As the Canadian publication notes, American law firms have reportedly been struggling to a greater extent in the current economy than their counterparts north of the border.

Our own ABA Journal search of eBay for such lawyer-offered items of gently used apparel did not immediately identify any men’s suits. However, we did find a lovely Dana Buchman women’s pantsuit described as having come “from the closet of a lady trial lawyer who appreciates quality, good taste and class.”

And we noticed earlier this week that San Francisco attorney Anna Ntenta was the proud purchaser of a $6,000 Vera Wang wedding dress for $2,500, after finding it offered online by a New York author, according to the Wall Street Journal.

“It was a lot less than I thought I would spend—and there were a lot of dresses out there,” Ntenta tells the newspaper.
