A 200-attorney Boston law firm has laid off 8 percent of its workforce, due to the difficult economy.
The management of Choate Hall & Stewart sent an internal memo today explaining that, despite a strong 2008, it is laying off 15 attorneys and 23 staff members, reports the Boston Business Journal.
"General economic conditions ... have affected our clients and we anticipate that they may affect our work levels this year," the memo reads, in part. "We currently have too many lawyers and staff in certain areas."
Boston's Foley Hoag announced a total of 32 attorney and staff layoffs last week.

We could try to get a report on conditions in Boston from Boston IP, but it is only January. He may not be able to post again until he makes his target billables, sometime in November.

The only uptick we are seing is labor and bankruptcy. Everything else is deader than doornails and I expect many more layoffs out of Boston.

Indeed, it seems like the layoff reports are coast to coast. This is already worse than the early 1990’s and does not appear to be near an end.
