A major renovation project at the courthouse in Woodstock, Va., has uncovered graffiti believed to date back to the Civil War era.

The Shenandoah County Historical Society hired an architectural historian to examine the landmark building, and now wants to hire a conservator to look for more of the long-ago scribbling, according to the Associated Press and the Daily News Record (sub. req.).

The courthouse was used to house soldiers during the Civil War.
