Police aren’t commenting on a report that a person of interest in the slaying of dismembered Mercer University law graduate Lauren Giddings had a master key that opened all the apartments in their building.

Giddings’ neighbor, Evelyn Spencer, says police told her a master key was found in the apartment of another law student living in their building, Stephen Mark McDaniel, the Macon Telegraph reports. McDaniel has been accused of stealing condoms in burglaries of two law students’ apartments and was identified as a person of interest in the Giddings case.

A bond hearing for McDaniel was postponed Wednesday after his lawyer argued McDaniel’s prior employment as a law clerk at the district attorney’s office created a conflict of interest requiring a different prosecutor to step in, the story reports. The lawyer, Floyd Buford, noted that McDaniel hasn’t been charged in Giddings’ death and hasn’t been identified as a suspect.

Meanwhile, police removed a refrigerator from an apartment being vacated by another student. The student’s furniture was gone before Giddings’ body was found, a co-owner of the building told the Telegraph. The tenant has since finished moving out.
