Volunteer actors in Harper Lee’s hometown of Monroeville, Alabama, have been staging the play based on To Kill a Mockingbird for 27 years, but the show will come to an end after this year.

The company that licenses the play, Dramatic Publishing Co. of Illinois, has instead awarded the rights to a group in Kentucky, report Al.com and the Associated Press.

The decision is a blow to Monroeville, which suffered after the closing of textile plants years ago. The play aids tourism, which brings $200,000 a year to the community.

Monroe County Museum Board President Tom Lomenick said on Thursday that the museum will bring in less money without performances of the play and will have to lay off staffers and reduce services.
