A former client of a New Mexico personal injury law firm was convicted Thursday of aggravated battery with great bodily harm in a 2013 attack on an employee there.

Although there were no visible injuries to the victim, Lovett Law Firm worker Jeffery Reyes, the Doña Ana County district attorney’s office said Kendrick Keaton choked Reyes to the point of unconsciousness and destroyed furniture at the office. A Las Cruces police detective testified that many individuals who are strangled have little or no visible marks on their necks afterward, the Las Cruces Sun-News reports.

The DA’s office said Keaton was angry about being expected to pay a $115 medical bill in connection with a personal injury case in which the law firm was representing him.

Reyes told the newspaper he is satisfied with the verdict.

Keaton was released on bond pending sentencing.
