After a record number of applications last year—the highest since 2004—the University of Missouri School of Law predicts a decrease in 2011.

“Last year Mizzou Law received 1,024 applications for 150 spots,” Michelle Heck, School of Law Admissions and Recruitment coordinator, told the Maneater, the official student newspaper of the University of Missouri. “Although this year’s cycle is not over, we will be seeing a decrease as applications are down over 12 percent nationwide.”

Although the economy may be one contributor to the decline, Heck cautions that the statistics may also reflect the normal application rate trend.

“Law schools typically see a plateau in applications before applications decrease drastically and then start to rise again,” Heck told the Maneater.

In contrast, the university’s graduate school has seen a slight increase in applications over this time last year, the newspaper reports.
