A Virginia attorney has had his law license revoked after a three-judge panel ruled that he hid $161,000 in income during his divorce.

Allan Zaleski, a lawyer for Mark Kantro told the Virginian-Pilot that his client plans to appeal. The facts are related to a personal divorce and have “nothing to do with his performance,” he told the newspaper.

In 2005, Kantro received a $161,000 payment for legal fees and gave $150,000 of that to his mother to open in an account under her name, and he Kantro didn’t disclose the fees to his ex-wife for more than two years, according to court records.

Kantro’s revocation is effective June 11 to give him time to wind up his practice, the summary order stated. A Virginia State Bar spokesman said Kantro can apply for reinstatement with the Virginia Supreme Court in five years.

Kantro received public reprimands from the Virginia State Bar in 2009 (PDF) and 2010 (PDF) over diligence, reasonable fees and client communications.
