Legal writer Jeffrey Toobin, author of a new book on the U.S. Supreme Court, tells the Wall Street Journal Law Blog that Barack Obama could be the next nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Toobin thinks it could happen if Hillary Clinton is elected president. Obama is a former law professor who is young and an ethnic minority—qualities that make him a good choice, Toobin says. The kicker is that placing Obama on the court would eliminate him as a future political threat to Clinton.

Toobin says he thinks Obama would take the job, even though he has said he would find it too sedentary. “I thought his declaration of lack of interest was extremely halfhearted,” Toobin said. “I think he’d like to be on the Supreme Court.”

Toobin is promoting his new book, The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court.
