President Obama has nominated an openly gay lawyer to fill the judicial seat that had been held by U.S. District Judge Denny Chin before his elevation to the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

The nominee, J. Paul Oetken, could become the first openly gay man to serve on the federal bench, the New York Times reports. Oetken is a senior vice president and associate general counsel for Cablevision.

The Times adds that a second openly gay nominee, Edward DuMont, has been nominated to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Obama renominated DuMont, a partner at WilmerHale, in January after Congress did not act on the nomination last year, Metro Weekly reports.
