Sotomayor Used ‘Wise Latina’ Line More than Once

By Debra Cassens Weiss

Judge Sonia Sotomayor’s controversial remark about wise Latina judges has appeared in more than one speech.

Sotomayor frequently remarked on her ethnicity and gender in 84 speeches released by the White House yesterday, according to reports in the New York Times and the Washington Post. The speeches by Sotomayor, who is of Puerto Rican descent, show the Supreme Court nominee “is driven by a powerful ethnic pride and a belief that she has an obligation to lift up fellow people of color,” the Post says.

Earlier reports of the controversial remark identified a 2001 law speech at the University of California at Berkeley in which Sotomayor said the ethnicity and sex of a judge “may and will make a difference in our judging.”

“I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life,” said Sotomayor, who is of Puerto Rican descent.

The Washington Post found another 1999 speech to the Women's Bar Association of New York State in which Sotomayor referred to "sister power" and used similar phrasing. "I would hope that a wise woman with the richness of her experiences would, more often than not, reach a better conclusion," she said.

The Times said Sotomayor made the wise judging comment, referring to women generally, in 1994. Then in 2003 she said a “wise Latina woman” would “reach a better conclusion,” although she didn’t say better than whom.

The White House argues that Sotomayor has explained that she is impartial despite her references to her background. It points to a speech in which she said, “I have to unhook myself from my emotional responses and try to stay within my unemotional, objective persona.”

Other Sotomayor quotes published in the Times and Post stories:

“Somewhere all of us Puerto Ricans and people of color have had a defining moment when we were shocked into learning that we were different and that American society treated us differently. … The shock and sense of being an alien will never again, I suspect, be as profound for any of us as that first experience, because I know from personal experience that our education and professional training have equipped us to deal better in this sometimes alien land.”

"The Latina in me is an ember that blazes forever."

“America has a deeply confused image of itself that is a perpetual source of tension. … We are a nation that takes pride in our ethnic diversity, recognizing its importance in shaping our society and in adding richness to its existence. Yet we simultaneously insist that we can and must function and live in a race- and color-blind way that ignores those very differences that in other contexts we laud.”

[On one reason for a delay in her confirmation as an appeals judge on the New York-based 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals] "I was dealt with on the basis of stereotypes ... and it was painful ... and not based on my record. … I got a label because I was Hispanic and a woman and [therefore] I had to be liberal."

Moderator - can we have a story on this?

Authorities in San Francisco who called the beliefs of the Catholic hurch “hateful,” “callous,” and an “insult,” – and urged members to disobey them – have been given the go-ahead by a panel of judges on the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to express such hate because it serves a “secular” purpose.

This is huge story because now we can can trash islam, hindu’s, jews, christians without any fear of reprisal.

She remarked on her ethnicity and gender in 84 speeches? Obsessed much? I’ve always said that liberals are OBSESSED with race, skin color, and gender issues—more so than eugenicists like Hitler ever were.

It’s pretty sad and disgusting. The Libs are dragging down the effort to reach MLK, Jr.‘s dream of a colorblind society.

J.D. seems never to have read “Mein Kampf” or to have read anyhting about 20th century world history.  His views about Hitler should not be taken more seriously than those of the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem.

But Sotomayor’s choice of words is more absurd for a different reason.  Historically, a “wise woman” was a “witch.”

Does anyone really believe that there exists a judge in the world who isn’t arrogant?
Geez - look at Scalia.
Sure she thinks her poop smells like roses!  She has earned the arrogance.
Personally, that she shares her successes with her ethnicity and gender is to her credit.
What she did she did alone.
So leave her alone.

If you want an example of a horrendous use of the ethnicity/race/gender card consider this:

HIGH TECH LYNCHING

I think it is amusing that of everything Dr. King said and wrote, J.D. only knows about one sound byte from a single public speech.

No, Andy, I haven’t read that book. But I supposed I should in order to understand the mind of a big-government liberal who thinks a powerful federal government is the answer to all the world’s woes.

JD—consider also the miserable failures of Herbert Hoover, whose three-year refusal to use governmental power to do anything to halt or slow the collapse of banks and businesses nationwide led to FDR’s election—and to the exile from power of the Republican Party for the next 20 years.

...and replaced individual liberty with big-government control over our lives.

But you make a great point: Not only did FDR want big government—even though the economy was already beginning to fix itself BEFORE he got involved—he also DISMISSED the long-held tradition of presidents running only for 2 terms…. just as one would expect of a big-government liberal fascist.

He also put Japanese, Germans, and Italians in internment camps. Now who did something like this in Germany…......?

I don’t think anyone in Germany put Japanese in internment camps.

Well, firstly, being a latina has nothing to do with color. It just means that the person is female, and not male. Or is spanish speaking and perhaps a mixture of african, native american and european. But these definitions are very fluid, since many latinas don’t speak spanish and have only one ethinicty, not three. Regarding a color blind society, this means that we do not judge people inferior or superior because they have high or low deposits of melanin in their skin. This is only relevant, since in America many stores, hotels, busses, bars, schools, and businesses disallowed people entrance if they did not have low deposits of melanin. But then again we also disallowed jews, irish, asian, native americans, and italians. So, we must understand that Mr. Kings color blind expression was ‘only’ a euphemism for any kind of derogation of humans based on differences. It is a strong euphmism since we all have seen the signs forbidding people of high melanin on busses and in bathrooms. Anyone in their right mind, knows that geniuses are not created because they have less melanin than the next guy. It is a euphemism that all religious leaders use, when they ask us to treat out fellow human as we wish to be treated, irregardless of melanin, gender, disability, poverty, sexual partner, etc…

Perhaps to Ms. Weiss claiming your self wise or latina is controversial, it is not. She is only stating the obvious. The woman is smart, old and latin, i.e. meaning that she or her ancestors were born in south or central america. She is a woman who is old enough that she or others can comfortably call themselves wise. It is a moniker that comes from living long enough to have observed the mistakes of others and one’s own. In my law office, there is an older attorney, that the person in charge would like to put out to pasture, for some reason. But, many of the seasoned attorneys want him to stay, because he has knowledge in his head, that you can’t find in a book that someone took the time to write. Why is it that we tolerate wise people in books, but not in person? Are you wise irish woman or wise jewish woman or wise polish woman or wise Italian woman? Also, for the poster above, a wise woman does not mean a witich. People cannot fly with broomsticks, but women and men can cure people of illnesses with plants, molds, bacteria, etc… And ever person I cursed and hoped to die, actually fell over with T.B. or dropped dead, than I would be a very feared person, but it is just stories for people who believe in fairy tales.

I certainly don’t mind someone who’s a judge first and a Latina next but I do object to someone who’s a Latina first and a judge next. The law is supposed to be unbiased and there’s no way she can be that. Her or any other obama nominee. She’s going to get the job and that’s another step down for America that obama has taken.

People need to stop pulling the race card it is just sad that people think they can use there race to down white people. We need to stand up and say this is enough , stop giving people handouts , because of there race , and make them do something for themselves other then making there own neighborhoods look like garbage.

AMAZING that this Liberal Extremist Racist could ever be a “Judge” when she spews hatred to White People and White Males 24/7. She is a COWARD who has never been held accountable for her RACIST RANTS as she is too busy conspiring to give ILLEGAL ALIENS our jobs/ss#/benefits/etc. She puts her RACE (i.e. Latina) above everything. Can you IMAGINE if White People did that being OVER 70% of the US Population and over 80% if all of the ILLEGAL ALIENS were deported? Anyone who “supports” this racist LOON deserves to RECEIVE what she spews…hatred of ones skin color. Nuff said.

Actually, too much said, ## 15 and 16 both.  Nor are your words much words of wisdom.  When you write in such a fashion, you only discredit yourselves and your message.

The racist, sexist comments by Judge Sotomayor are very disturbing. She should not be on the Supreme Court, let alone a Judge. Even more, the willingness of the Democrats in the Senate to confirm her just indicates that there are no more statesmen in Congress, only cheap politicians with no thought for the long term consequences of their actions.

It’s been said many times, but I will repeat it.  If a white male up for a supreme court nomination said he could make better decisions because he is just that, he would be automatically rejected by both parties.  No-one would touch him.  So why is there a double standard?  Can anyone please explain it logically to me?  I’m all ears!
