The Bluto Blutarsky Option: Arizona State to Offer Seven-Year JD

Students who would like to earn their law degree at a more leisurely pace may want to consider Arizona State’s Sandra Day O’Connor School of Law.

The school has announced a new flexible schedule program that gives students seven years to earn a law degree. The program allows students to take a reduced course load of two or three courses a semester alongside candidates in the full-time program. The first year’s course work would have to be completed in two years.

The program is designed to appeal to students who need to keep working or who have other significant obligations.

TaxProf Blog notes the flex-time option and the seven-year time frame.

“One of my favorite lines in Animal House is when John Belushi's Bluto Blutarsky is told that he and his frat brothers are going to be kicked out of Faber College,” blogger Paul Caron writes. “He says, ‘Seven years down the drain!’ ”

The significance is not so much the easier pace as the opportunity for students to earn more of the money to cover tuition as they go.  Students can weigh the cost of taking longer to enter the market against the benefit of lower loan balances.  In this market, a seven-year program looks pretty good.

Per Dean Wormer, Mr. Blutarsky was not on course to graduate.  If seven years is not enough time, will this law school grant extensions?  What would Otter think?

Seven years is a long time to be in law school. I think there is something to be said about full-time or part-time law graduation in a 3 to 4 year period. You don’t see medical schools allowing graduates to take a class here or there. Law schools are willing to do anything to recruit students and make money these days. What’s next, online JD that’s ABA accred?

Also, like Blutarsky, less schoolwork means more time to chase the babes.  Now all we need is a slob like “Flounder” to provide a town car to tool around town in to find the best women.  Arizona State has a pretty good track record in attracting women; query whether the bar will be lowered to allow law school women to enroll here.
