It didn't take police in Durham, N.C., long to get their man after a resident reported his yard had been torn up when an apparent drunken driver ran off the road and drove through it.

Resident Bill McDonald owns two large dogs and hadn't cleaned up their recent dog poop deposits. So when authorities arrived, they discovered not only a broken-down fence, damaged bushes and an inoperable car left at the scene but a shoeprint in a fresh pile of droppings and a trail of dog poop markings leading down the street where the suspect had fled. Following up, they soon discovered a drunken suspect whose shoes happened to be covered with evidence, reports the Raleigh News & Observer.

Josue Herrios-Coronilla, 18, was charged with driving while impaired and underage, the newspaper reports. The article doesn't say whether a DNA test is planned to try to match the dog droppings.

Herrios-Coronilla couldn't be reached for comment.
