The Webby Awards, known as the Oscars of the Internet, honored some high- profile celebrities last night, but some legal websites also took home honors in the competition.

Comedian Jimmy Fallon won “person of the year” for posting his act before going on late-night TV with his talk show, Reuters reports. Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails was honored as artist of the year for making his 2008 album available for free on the band’s website.

Winner of a Webby award in the legal category was WomensLaw.org, a website dedicated to helping victims of domestic abuse. WomensLaw.org has tips on how to safely leave an abuser, information on preparing for court, and advice on how to find a lawyer. It is funded by private donations and grants.

GetLegal.com won the People’s Voice Award, based on popular voting, in the legal category. The website offers a lawyer directory and original articles. A press release says the website’s Legal Information Center, developed in conjunction with Cornell Law School’s Legal Information Institute, is the heart of the website. It offers both written content and video that explains basic legal principles relating to a variety of legal topics, including crime, personal injury, divorce and immigration.

The Webby Awards honor excellence on the Internet and are administered by the International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences. Last year, ABAJournal.com won the People’s Voice Award in the legal category, but it wasn’t in the running this year. ABAJournal.com was, however, recognized as a 2009 Honoree.
