Wiley Rein is attributing new layoffs to changes in client demand and a new strategic plan.

Wiley Rein didn’t confirm the number of layoffs in a statement to Above the Law, but the blog obtained a statement saying that 18 partners and of counsel, 18 secretaries, and 12 administrative support staffers were leaving the firm. Above the Law notes that no associates were on the list.

In the statement, Wiley Rein managing partner Peter Shields explained the decision this way: “At the beginning of 2014, to maintain Wiley Rein’s competitive advantage in the marketplace, we undertook a thorough, year-long business review that resulted in the firm launching a strategic plan focusing on client service, practice management, strategic growth, and social responsibility. As part of this process, and in response to changes in client demand in certain areas, we needed to take steps to ensure our professional and staff resources were aligned with our strategic and practice area goals.

“As a result of this comprehensive effort, we decided to take this difficult step to ensure the firm continues to grow strategically, while serving clients successfully and efficiently.”

Last November, the firm cited anticipated needs of clients and its strategic plan when it spun off its eight-lawyer bankruptcy and restructuring group.
