A judge in Louisville, Kentucky, called jail officials from the bench on Friday and demanded an explanation for the appearance of a defendant brought to her courtroom.

The defendant appeared to be wearing no pants, report WDRB-TV, the Associated Press and the Louisville Courier-Journal.

Judge Amber Wolf made the call after a public defender said the jail refused to give the woman pants or feminine hygiene products. “Am I in the twilight zone?” Wolf asked. “What is happening?”

The woman is wearing a long T-shirt and standing behind a podium in a video of the incident. She said she was arrested the prior Sunday. She had been arrested for failing to participate in a diversion program after a shoplifting conviction.

The jail’s assistant director and spokesman, Steve Durham, said the woman was actually wearing shorts beneath the T-shirt. Durham said the woman was wearing the same clothes she had on when arrested, and wasn’t given a jumpsuit because she wasn’t in custody for a long enough time period.
