Updated: Cynthia Rodriguez, the wife of famed New York Yankees third baseman Alex “A-Rod” Rodriguez filed for divorce in Florida today, alleging infidelity and emotional abandonment of his family.

But her soon-to-be ex-husband has lost no time in retaining a high-profile Miami divorce attorney. Ira Elegant, who also represents basketball superstar Shaquille O’Neal in his divorce, has signed on to represent the baseball slugger, too, reports the Miami Herald.

“Elegant was on a yacht Monday in Turkey and had not seen Cynthia’s petition, filed Monday morning in Miami-Dade circuit court,” the newspaper reports. However, he plans to be back next week and says it’s just a coincidence that he is now representing two of the nation’s best-known professional athletes.

News of Cynthia Rodriguez’ planned filing today was reported in large-type headlines in New York tabloids over the holiday weekend, notes Runnin’ Scared, a Village Voice blog. Although C-Rod, 35, blames pop singer Madonna for brainwashing her husband, the Material Girl denies that she has any relationship with A-Rod, 32, according to the blog’s wrap-up of earlier news coverage.
