E-Mail Snafu at UNC Leads Law Applicants to Believe They Were Accepted

A software upgrade last weekend at the UNC School of Law didn’t work as hoped.

The upgrade resulted in an e-mail snafu that led some applicants to believe they had been accepted, Above the Law reports. The mistaken e-mail invited the applicants to attend Admitted Students Day, but it was sent to students whose applications are currently in review with the admissions committee.

Assistant dean for admissions Michael States told the blog that school officials immediately recognized the error and followed up with an e-mail 15 minutes later admitting the mistake.

The software upgrade resulted in a problem with “tags” that indicated students’ position in the application process, States explained in a statement to the blog. The e-mail was supposed to have picked up students tagged as accepted, but instead picked students based on their position on a list.
