Federally charged in 2013 with transmitting a threat via interstate commerce, a former Bryan Cave lawyer pleaded guilty on Wednesday and admitted to leaving a death threat on a partner’s voicemail.

Ryan Walsh, now 32, worked in the firm’s New York office for about six months before he was laid off in 2008, said assistant U.S. Attorney Howard Marcus. The partner was in Bryan Cave’s headquarters office in St. Louis, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Walsh made the threats in June 2013.

Assistant federal public defender Kevin Curran represents Walsh, who told U.S. District Judge Henry Autrey that he has bipolar disorder and is on medication.

Walsh also said he expects to be sentenced to time served, although the judge retains discretion, the article reports.

Curran said his client has already spent more time behind bars than federal sentencing guidelines call for, while the case was delayed for mental health evaluations.
