Attorney General Eric Holder spotted what he considered a great photo op during a federal appeals conference: Solicitor General Elena Kagan, rumored to be on the short list of possible Supreme Court nominees, was speaking with retiring Justice John Paul Stevens.

The Washington Post noted Holder’s comment: “Boy, the press should get that picture,” he said. Then, he quickly downplayed the remark. “I’m not saying anything,” he said.

The Post says Kagan “has been more in the public eye than usual,” appearing at federal circuit conferences in Pennsylvania, Chicago and Columbus, Ohio, the place where Holder made his comment.

The story says President Obama will announce a decision on a nominee soon, but next week is likelier than this week. Yesterday, senior presidential adviser David Axelrod said Obama still had not made a decision.
