The chief justice of the Illinois Supreme Court has disclosed he has Parkinson’s Disease and will retire next month.

Justice Thomas Fitzgerald, 69, told his colleagues about his diagnosis Monday and issued this statement: “I don’t want to do anything to hurt the court or the people it serves. Right now I am fully capable of discharging my duties. I don’t know how long it will be true.”

The Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun-Times have stories.

The other justices voted to appoint Appellate Justice Mary Jane Theis to replace Fitzgerald for a two-year interim term. Theis’ appointment puts three women on Illinois’ top court for the first time.
