Judge Seeks Arrest of 92 Jury-Duty Shirkers, Gets Some Results
Twelve Washington, D.C., residents have turned themselves in or been arrested for shirking jury duty.
The 12 people are among 92 who are subject to arrest for failing to show up for jury duty, reports The BLT: The Blog of Legal Times. Judge Rufus King III of Washington, D.C., superior court announced last week that he had issued bench warrants for the arrests of all 92 people.
Courts spokeswoman Leah Gurowitz said the dozen people have each paid a $25 bond. Their names will be returned to the jury pool, and they will each be given a chance to appear in court and explain their absence.
Two others called the court and were assigned hearing dates, while two more were declared ineligible for jury duty.
Gurowitz said the goal is not to arrest people. “But for those who shirk their civic duty, there are consequences,” she told the blog.
